The BCS fails yet again.

So well all know that a key component of the BS BCS figures are the “style points”. So why did the system fail us once again? This past weekend we saw no change in the top three teams in the BCS standings…shocking…no not really as this is what we have come to expect from this system, it just oozes with controversy. The top three teams are Florida, Alabama, and Texas respectively and not many would argue that fact seeing as how many think the SEC is the best conference in football today. And considering that the last three national champions have come from the SEC someone would be hard-pressed to make an argument against the SEC. That being said however and getting back to the topic at hand whatever happened to the “style points” the BCS claims are so important? Saturday afternoon gave us a #2 Alabama team that struggled to beat an unranked Tennessee team…actually had to block a last second field goal and should have lost. Florida was a little closer the final score really was did not tell the tale of the game. Closing out the first half Florida has a chance to score and take command of the game, instead Tebow is picked off in the endzone and it is returned 102 yards for a touchdown giving Mississippi State new hope. In the end Tebow did what he always does and willed his team to victory but not in convincing fashion. Then we come to Texas. A team that put up 35 points in the first half and completely tore the heart out of Missori from the first snap. Speaking as someone who watched all three games I can say that Texas was the only game that I was not affraid of a major upset happening. All three top teams played mediocre unranked opponents but only one won in convincing fashion. And despite all this, despite that the fact that the BCS preaches style points and winning big are a factor in rankings, Texas is still on the outside looking in. There is still a lot of football left to play and a lot can happen in the remaining weeks but with what I’ve seen this weekend I’d be hard pressed to accept the argument later in the season for a team leap-frogging up the standings based on winning with style. The BCS this weekend has basically proven that it is a flawed system, even when teams try to do what the system preaches, they may not necessarily be punished but the sure aren’t rewarded. The BS BCS at it’s finest!

Love him or hate him, Tim Tebow is the face of college football today. Many will argue that he represents all that is good about college football…and I would be inclined to agree. Critics will knock his slow delivery and claim there are several quaterbacks in the game right now that are better…maybe true. Tim Tebow is NOT the best throwing quarterback playing college football today…but he IS the best overall quaterback! When I think of a quaterback I don’t think only of someone that can drop back in the pocket and deliver a strike on a 15 yard deep out route, I think of someone who can lead their team, and that is exactly what Tim Tebow does. He is a leader, willing to put his team on his back and carry them to victory. While he does have a slower than average delivery with the ball, his entangibles more than make up for this flaw. Last year if he had left school and entered the NFL draft critics probably would have been vindicated because he most likely would not have been a high pick. Now however, with more and more NFL teams trying to employ some version of the “wildcat” offense, suddenly someone like Tebow seems to be a little more valuble. The simple fact is that Tebow was hosed last year in the Heisman voting, there is no way that the now injury prone Sam Bradford was a better player…which is what the Heisman winner is…the best PLAYER in the country. Bradford may have been a better pure passer and a more prototypical NFL quaterback, but Tebow was by far a better player and by far more important to his teams success. Tebow is a warrior who will be vindicated by winning his second Heisman trophy this year along side of leading his team to their thrird straight national championship.
